This lovely miniature is a superb example of the work of George Engleheart, one of the most famous miniaturists of the 18th and 19th century.
The painting is of Helen, the wife of the Rev. G. Malcolm. This is engraved on the silver reverse of the frame, and the name George Engelheart is also engraved underneath.
This must have been a very special work for Engelheart - perhaps of a close friend, or a family member.
The miniature is exquisite. The workmanship of the highest and the condition excellent. Cursive "e" to the bottom right of the portrait which is Engleheart's signiture. This is usually only seen on his superior works.
Helen wears a white dress, she has a coral or garnet necklace round her neck, and her pretty hair is piled high on her head and secured with a comb.
As mentioned, the frame is of sterling silver which is very unusual. The engraving is clear, and we feel this miniature was well looked after.
The condition is excellent, far better than the photos show. There is reflection, and the reverse with the engraving is almost impossible to photograph properly.
The measurements are 3 1/2" x 3"
This miniature is of such a quality that deserves a place in a serious collection. Please let us know iif further details are required.
